A Six-Week Initiative Transforms Young Players, Thanks to Grassroots Mzansi and Green Point Cricket Club
A groundbreaking cricket development program at Sea Point Primary School has wrapped up, leaving a lasting impact on 32 young learners. The six-week initiative, run in partnership with Green Point Cricket Club and Grassroots Mzansi, provided students with valuable opportunities to develop cricket skills, learn about the game, and experience the thrill of team sports—despite the challenges posed by limited facilities.
The program, which ran from February to March 2025, aimed to address key gaps in school cricket development, including a lack of structured coaching, limited resources, and a need for sustainable growth in the sport. The results have been impressive, with children developing essential skills, learning the rules of the game, and gaining the confidence to play competitively.
Sea Point Primary, located in an area with few sports programs, faced several challenges that hindered its ability to provide cricket coaching for students. Among these were limited sporting facilities, a lack of structured training programs, and a significant gap in technical cricket skills among young learners.
However, Green Point Cricket Club’s coaching team—with support from Grassroots Mzansi donors—was able to make a meaningful difference.
"Our venue/facilities are extremely limited, but the dedicated coaching has proved that skills can be enhanced and practiced, regardless of circumstances,” said Hanno Huisamen, Head of the Sports Department at Sea Point Primary.
Despite the challenges, the coaching sessions, which took place twice a week, focused on developing foundational cricket skills. The six-week program included essential technical training, from batting and bowling basics to fielding techniques and understanding cricket terminology. The learners were also introduced to match play, culminating in a fun but competitive match simulation in the final week.
The program, which was customised to accommodate different skill levels, focused on:
Weeks 1–3: Fundamental skill development (batting, bowling, and fielding)
Weeks 4–5: Skill enhancement through point-based challenges and inter-group competitions
Week 6: Practical match simulation with paired batting/bowling rotations, field positioning, and applied skill development
One of the most impactful results of the program was the sense of community it fostered at Sea Point Primary. The involvement of teachers in coaching sessions ensured the program's sustainability, while the students showed tremendous growth both as individuals and as a team.
The program also had a profound emotional and social impact. As cricket became a platform for expression, students developed not just their athletic skills but also their teamwork, discipline, and leadership abilities—traits that will serve them long beyond the cricket field.
